Opioid Use

This is a curated list of comprehensive codes identifying targeted non-IV administered opioid medications. Recommendations specify how Electronic Health Record (EHR) medication records for a targeted cohort can be searched to identify all filled prescriptions.

1. All non-IV fills of:

  • Codeine
  • Fentanyl
  • Hydrocodone
  • Hydromorphone
  • Morphine
  • Oxycodone
  • Tramadol

2. All non-IV, pill/tablet pills of:

  • Methadone

3. All transdermal or buccal fills of:

  • Buprenorphine

Additional parameters applied to characterize opioid use:

  • Number supplied
  • Days supplied
  • a/b x conversion factor = milligrams morphine equivalent daily dose (MEDD)
  • mg MEDD at enrollment
  • mg MEDD monthly during enrollment and at study completion
  • Total mg MEDD supplied in year before enrollment

Long-Term Opioid Use is defined as prescription of an opioid medication over a 90-day period, with a maximum allowable gap of up to 30 days between fills.
